As an artist you need to spend some time on the business side of your art. So, to make this time count and allow you to get back to what you love to do, here are a couple tips to make your art business time efficient and effective.

  1. Create a workspace. Even if it is a small desk that’s okay but it has to be dedicated to your art business time and have a proper and comfortable chair.
  2. Dedicate a telephone line for just your art business. Telephone landlines are very cost effective and are perfect to receive art related calls from both art professionals and prospects. Remember to keep the voicemail message brief but professional and never answer a business phone by just saying “Hello!?”
  3. Do not give out your art business phone number to friends for personal calls. This number should only be given out to prospects and art industry professionals. You need to keep business and personal separate.
  4. Never answer call waiting when you are already on a business call. All this does is make the caller feel like they are not as important. You can call the other person back after.
  5. You have to have access to a computer. Make yourself a dedicated folder on the desktop of your computer  if it is also used for other purposes that way you can keep presentations, your CV, cover letters, research, contact information, bookkeeping, etc. organized and always easy to find.
  6. Make sure your computer is in good working condition and running quickly. You do not want to waste time waiting for a connection or a loading icon – you have work to do!
  7. Get a printer. From time to time you are going to need to print something off your computer it is that simple.
  8. Get a filing system and label the folders. Stay organized. You will thank yourself later!
  9. Remove all distractions. Turn off the television and radio, hang a do not disturb sign on the door and get it done.
  10. Spend time on planning before you begin working. If you take 15-30 minutes prior to working and develop a game plan for the work session you will find that you spend less time aimlessly “Googling” and more time focused and productive.

REMEMBER: 1 hour of focused and productive work is better then 3 passive ones!
